Advocacy, Awareness, and Action: A Melanoma Survivor’s Journey
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, prevention, and amplifying the voices of those affected by one of the most common — yet often underestimated — cancers. Today, we’re sharing Rich’s powerful story of early detection, resilience, and how knowledge truly became his lifeline.
“It’s just skin cancer… right?”
Like many, Rich once assumed melanoma was minor — something you simply cut off and move on from. That assumption would soon be challenged by a spot that appeared on his leg out of nowhere and grew rapidly. Having spent years as a U.S. Naval officer and a passionate long-distance runner, Rich was no stranger to discipline — but cancer presented a different kind of challenge.
A visit to the dermatologist turned into a full-body skin exam, leading to a biopsy and a phone call no one wants to receive: it was melanoma.
“There’s no good time to get a call like that,” he said. “I got a pit in my stomach. I wasn’t prepared.”
Turning Fear into Focus
Once the shock wore off, Rich did something many patients hesitate to do: he took control. He asked questions. He researched. He leaned on experts. He sought second opinions. And he quickly realized how critical it was to be informed about his own care.
“If you are an informed patient, you will get better treatments.”
That quote became his North Star — and it’s one of the most important takeaways this Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
From understanding the depth of melanoma and the importance of lymph node biopsies, to testing for the BRAF gene mutation, Rich made sure he was a participant in his care — not just a patient.
A New Era in Cancer Treatment
Thanks to advancements in science — including immunotherapy and targeted therapies — Rich’s diagnosis of stage 3B melanoma came with more options than patients had even a decade ago.
“Melanoma in 2022 is so much different than even 2012… These treatments didn’t exist back then. I’m just thankful for how far the science has come.”
Despite undergoing surgery, a skin graft, and ongoing treatment, Rich describes his daily life as surprisingly normal. In fact, he recalls one moment of profound realization:
“I went through a whole day and didn’t even realize I’m a cancer patient. What a blessing that is.”
What We Can Learn This Month — and Every Month
As we recognize Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Rich’s story reminds us of several key truths:
Don’t ignore unusual spots or changes in your skin.
Annual skin exams can save your life.
Be your own advocate — ask questions, get second opinions, and stay engaged.
Gratitude and science go hand-in-hand.
Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early — but early detection relies on awareness. Let Rich’s story inspire you to take action, support others, and share the importance of skin checks with those you love.
