A Ride That Can Change a Life: How Volunteers Are Helping Cancer Patients Get to Treatment
Getting to a doctor’s appointment may not seem like a big deal to some people—but for many cancer patients, transportation can be a real challenge. Thankfully, a program called Road to Recovery is making a big difference.
In 2025, more than 78,000 people in Illinois are expected to be diagnosed with cancer. That’s a large number of people who will need help—especially when it comes to getting to their treatments on time. That’s where Road to Recovery steps in.
What Is Road to Recovery?
Road to Recovery is a program run by the American Cancer Society. It connects cancer patients with volunteer drivers who offer free rides to and from medical appointments. These volunteers aren’t just drivers—they often become trusted companions along the way.
One patient shared how the experience was about more than just a ride. “I didn’t feel like I was being picked up and dropped off like a package,” they said. “He rode with me—literally and emotionally—through the entire process.”
Why It Matters
Cancer treatment can be stressful enough. Having to worry about how to get to your next appointment can make things even harder. The American Cancer Society reports that over 23,000 people in Illinois are expected to die from cancer this year. Programs like Road to Recovery give patients one less thing to worry about—and often offer something even more valuable: a sense of connection.
Volunteer driver Mr. Ford explained that this program helps patients “take their minds off their circumstances” and sometimes leads to friendships that last a lifetime.
How You Can Get Involved
If you’re a cancer patient or caregiver, and you or a loved one needs a ride to treatment, the Road to Recovery program may be able to help. Visit the American Cancer Society website or call their local office to learn more about how to sign up.
If you’re someone who wants to help, becoming a volunteer driver is a simple but powerful way to make a difference. Even one ride can change a person’s day—or even their life.
